            On August 17, fifty years ago. Soekarno and Hatta-in the name of the Indonesian people announced the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. From that time on, August 17is celebrated by the people of Indonesia to commemorate the independence from the Dutch colonialism.

            The beginning of new Millennium August 17, 2000, is about to come in a week time. The days are moving quickly. Every Indonesia has expected the important day to arrive soon. They have hoisted the national flag, red and white, in front of their houses. The municipal government and the whole inhabitans have decorated Jakarta with flags, banners and thousands of decoration lamps.

            When the clock strikes 10.00 AM the Indonesia people will be watching the commemoration of the Indonesia independence day on tv or listening to the radio. Those who are lucky will be sitting at the palace, Istana Negara. They will be watching the ceremony of hoisting the “original” National Indonesia flag in front of the palace. At 10.00 o’clock sharp siren will be blown loudly as a signal of the beginning of the big event. The army will be firing 21 times salvo. Churches will be ringing the big bells and the mosque will be striking “the bedug” or big drums.
